HAPPY BOYS WON’T LISTEN – Osho Oláìítán Jeremiah

HAPPY BOYS WON’T LISTEN

I have seen boys before.I have seen humans of masculinity
that choked… and engulfed their spine
with the fears of cats and dogs…
Boys that wear for their body, a robe of silly names…
“Kettle, Ijagban” and their steps to the soil, their fathers “Baba-kí-baba”.

I know of Nigerian boys
that rolled their tyres under the hot day,
and built for their legs, a field of sandplay and football…
The scorching sun that feast from their scalp, is a
benevolent god they’d worship. And the downpour of
waters they chant from their mouth “e dey cool temper”.

Summer, I chew a bond of boys
under my grinder of thirty-two stones.
I swallowed them in my bowels.
I regurgitated. I spit the boys… of fear.
Like Ahmad, I tapped from the walls that
forgot to close their mouths, the elderly words.
I poured in their eardrums.

I broke them into thousand of pieces with a rod
and re-moulded them with words.
I took into my home from their lips,
a calendar of names — “the father of our fathers”
and “the master of dogs”.

But now, Winter, here you are!
My skull is crack like the village huts.
It is breaking! Lo, it breaks.
I squeezed it into a window of curtains.
Body stiff, neck long. And to my boys I cried.

Should I burn herbs of Panadol? Or Paracetamol?
This is a day I shed my tears.
I dragged my feet into a store of woods…
to fetch cash from a purse that river flows in its eyes.

Pheew—the boys I moulded had fled.
