AFCON 2022 Top Goal Scorers: Updated Golden Boot Ranking at Africa Cup of Nations

Salah might have scored the first goal during the tournament but Aboubakar Vincent is so far the top scorer in the tournament.  9 days into the AfCON tournament there has been a lot of tension, excitement, and winning as the best teams make it to the knockouts and hopefully to the finals. So far, a total of 57 goals have been scored by 45 scorers, some of whom have been mentioned in the subsequent sections of this article. Eight penalty scores have been made and an own goal scored by Aguerd of Morocco. With football tournaments of the AFCON caliber, it’s never really all about which team wins, as most football fans are punters as well.

Sports betting allows you as a fan to celebrate personal wins even when your favorite team isn’t doing so well. Now we know the teams we hope to see on our screens, and fans can now pick their second favorite team and follow their matches to see the outcomes. One sure way to heighten the fun is to place a bet on the team you think has it all to make it to the finals. While betting could help you make real quick cash, it could cost you a fortune if you are not careful of the sportsbook you decide to use. The best betting sites in Nigeria are the ones that are regulated, offer various payment methods, are safe and secure, and provide excellent customer care services.

The number of goals scored in a match during a tournament is one of the most common markets in sports betting. For this reason, it’s worth reviewing the top scorers in the AFCON 2022. Perhaps, you could wager on their team during their next match and hope to pocket some cash. Let’s take a look into the players who have graced the AFCON with scores so far.

As mentioned earlier, Vincent Aboubakar of the host team is the top scorer so far, with 5 goals. Salah or any other player has to work harder if they hope to make it to the top. Of the seven goals scored by Cameroon in the previous matches against Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, Aboubakar netted 2 goals each and one in his match against Cape Verde which ended in a 1-1 draw.  Khazri Wahbi of the Tunisia team Aboubakar’s teammate Karl Ekambi, Gabadinho of Malawi, Mognia of Comoros, Boufal of Morocco, Allevinah of Gabon, and Ibrahima of Mali all follow with 2 goals each. With the first stage matches over, the players who made it into the knockout rounds have the chance to get more scores. Here’s a list of the current top scorers for the season with assists as tiebreakers.

Position Player Goal (s) Assists Matches Team
1 Aboubakar Vincent 5 0 3 Cameroon
2 Khazri Wahbi 2 1 2 Tunisia
2 Karl Ekambi 2 0 3 Cameroon
2 Mhango Gabadinho 2 0 2 Malawi
2 Ibrahima Kone 2 0 2 Mali
2 Ahmed Mognia 2 0 3 Comoros
2 Boufal Sofiane 2 0 3 Morocco
2 Jim Allevinah 2 0 3 Gabon

Some of the fiercest players in the AFCON like Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City playing for the Algerian team didn’t make it to the knockouts, MO Salah and his Liverpool star mate Sadlo Mane has only scored a goal each in their previous matches. The latter has a chance to redeem themselves during the knockouts if they hope to compete with Aboubakar and others at the top.

Aboubakar scoring his five goals before the knockouts is impressive considering that the top scorer for the previous AFCON tournament in 2019 scored the same during the entire period. Should we hope for more from Vincent Aboubakar now that he’s back in the field on 24th Jan?

Nigeria has been a top scorer during three tournaments; AFCON 2002, 2013, and 2019, the most recent one. Should we hope that the Super Eagles will rise to the occasion in the upcoming matches? Well, they made it to the knockout rounds after their great win 3-1 against Sudan on Saturday 15th, so let’s hope for more surprises. However, with more matches on the way, it’s undeniable that Cameroon is not accepting defeat on their home soil and might even make history given their statistics so far, considering the tournament is a low-scoring one.

In other news, Ghana knocked out of Africa Cup of Nations by Comoros, Ending Score (3 – 2)
