#AFCON2023: Super Eagles are not reflecting their true potential, says Bashir Ahmad

Bashir Ahmad, a former Digital Communications Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari, says the Super Eagles have not been reflecting their true potential in recent times.

Ahmad said this on Sunday after Nigeria began their 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in their group A opening game.

Iban Salvador put Equatorial Guinea 1-0 up in the 36th minute courtesy of an assist from Jose Machin who did very well to displace the Nigerian defenders.

Their lead lasted for only two minutes, though, as Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, who had earlier been selfish by blazing into the sky instead of finding a teammate, got Nigeria’s equaliser.

Nigeria went very close to making it 2-1 on several occasions but they fell short each time and now, they will face Ivory Coast who beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in their next match.

“With a draw against Equatorial Guinea, the Super Eagles are not reflecting their true potential. Not a good start in Côte d’Ivoire,” Ahmad said.

“Hopefully, we will see an entirely different tactic and results in the subsequent matches.” The Eagles will face Ivory Coast who beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 in their next match.
