Bayern president: New Lewandowski deal is not a priority

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer sees no reason to negotiate a contract extension with world footballer of the year Robert Lewandowski at this stage.

Lewandowski, who turned 33 on Saturday, has been linked with a move away from Bayern by the British press.

“We don’t have to extend the contract today. He still has two years left on his contract,” Hainer told Bild TV on Sunday.

However, the 67-year-old said it was possible they would at some point extend the deal of “the world’s best striker” given he is such “a goal guarantee” for the record Bundesliga champions.

With around a week to go before the end of the August transfer window, Hainer sees “no acute need” for further new signings despite media pundits saying the squad looks light.

“We have an excellent squad,” said the president, who did not rule out a late transfer if the option arose.

Bayern’s priority is contract extensions for Germany players Joshua Kimmich (current deal until 2023) and Leon Goretzka (deal until 2022).

“The Kimmich/Goretzka axis is incredibly successful,” said Hainer.

He hinted talks with the two 26-year-old midfielders are close to being concluded.
