Chelsea Football Club is currently going through one of its worst seasons in recent times with the Blues occupying a hugely disappointing eleventh position on the English Premier League table with only eight matches more to be played before the 2022/23 campaign comes to an end.
Chelsea are perilously out of form; the West London club have failed to win any of its last seven games across all competitions.
Their most recent victory was recorded over a month ago when they defeated Leicester City 3-1 in a Premier League encounter at the King Power Stadium on March 11.
The Blues have in fact lost their last four matches in all competitions under Frank Lampard, the club’s third manager this season.
The Stamford Bridge landlords have also failed to win any of their last five matches at home, losing three and playing out two draws. If there is no appreciable improvement before the end of the season, Chelsea will not be playing European football next season.
Chelsea fans and football pundits across the globe are, however, worried as to why the Blues are struggling because they were the highest-spenders in Europe during the winter transfer window in January, spending a total of £323 million ($388m) to purchase eight new players.
A club with quality and expensive players such as Raheem Sterling, Mykhalo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Enzo Fernandez, and Joao Felix shouldn’t be struggling, but the reality is that they are.
So, what exactly is the problem?
SIGNING OF TOO MANY PLAYERS
Chelsea owner, Todd Boehly has spent close to £600 million on 17 players in the past two transfer windows. A squad as large as this would always find it very difficult to gel as it would take time and a lot of training sessions for the players to understand each other on the pitch.
Also, as the saying goes, ‘too many cooks spoil the broth’, too many news star players in the Chelsea set-up appear to be causing problems instead of helping the club succeed.
Even former gaffer, Graham Potter reportedly lamented that the size of the current Chelsea squad brought about problems in training as he had too many players to coach.
Potter had 31 first-team players at his disposal and the Englishman felt training such a large squad was problematic for him which in turn affected results.
LACK OF QUALITY STRIKER
It is such a pity that Chelsea actually rely heavily on Kai Havertz as their number nine when in actual fact, the German is not even a striker.
Despite spending heavily on new players, Chelsea probably forgot to buy a quality striker even after sending Romelu Lukaku out on loan to Inter Milan.
The Blues only signed Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in January but he has rarely featured.
If you don’t score, you can’t win matches and Chelsea have scored just one goal in their last six matches in all competitions due to the lack of a quality striker despite creating numerous scoring opportunities.
