Design

The overall design of the Pixel 7 is premium and sleek. Google has opted for a metal frame and a glass back instead of the all-rounder glass design on the Pixel 6. There is also a metal frame with curved edges and a matte finish. It also features a punch-hole display, which houses the front-facing camera, and slim bezels around the screen. The Pixel 7 Pro has a similar design but with a larger display and a more pronounced camera bar.

The Pixel 7 camera strip is a distinguishing feature. It’s camera bar runs horizontally across the back of the 5G phone in a specially designated location. The camera bar houses the phone’s camera system and comes in a contrasting color to the rest of the phone’s body, which is available in several color options. Compared to the Google Pixel 6 rear camera the bump is now placed a bit lower, leaving more space around the top.

The Google Pixel 7 glass sheets are Gorilla Glass Victus. The Google phone has iP68 certification against water and dust. Like the Pixel 6’s design, the Google logo is absent on the back of the phone. Instead, the Pixel 7 has a “G” logo near the bottom of the back panel. This minimalist design approach is in line with Google’s focus on clean and simple aesthetics.

On the side, there is the power button, volume button, while the bottom host the USB-C connector which sits between the two speaker grilles. The Google Pixel 7 is available in three colour including Obsidian, Lemongrass, Snow.

Display

The Google Pixel 7 has a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels resulting to 416 ppi density. The display also has a 90Hz refresh rate, which makes scrolling and animations look smoother compared to a standard 60Hz display.

It has 20:9 aspect ratio and 84.9% screen-to-body ratio that provide a more immersive viewing experience, as there is less distraction from the bezels and other elements around the display. It can also make the phone feel more compact and easier to hold, as there is less wasted space on the front of the device.

Furthermore, the displays on the Pixel 7 models have support for HDR10+ and offer good color accuracy and contrast. The displays are also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which is the toughest glass available for smartphones. The displays also support an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication.

Overall, the display offers a great viewing experience with vibrant colors, high contrast, and faster refresh rate. The larger display on the Pixel 6 Pro with a higher resolution and faster refresh rate makes it even better for watching videos, playing games, and browsing the web.

Camera

The major upgrade in the Google Pixel 7 is its camera department. It has a dual rear camera setup that includes a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera.

The primary camera comes with 1/1.31″ optical format which is a relatively large sensor size for a smartphone. This large sensor size, combined with Google’s computational photography algorithms, helps to capture detailed and vibrant images with good dynamic range and low noise, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Furthermore, the primary camera features Laser AF, OIS and a multi-directional PDAF system, which means that the autofocus points cover a larger area of the camera sensor and can detect phase differences from multiple directions. This improves the speed and accuracy of autofocus, allowing the camera to quickly lock onto a subject and capture sharp, in-focus images.

The ultrawide on the other hand has f/2.2 aperture, 1.25µm pixel pitch and offers 114-degree field of view that makes it ideal for capturing landscapes, group shots, and other wide-angle scenes where you want to fit as much into the frame as possible.

The Pixel phone also supports Night Sight, which is Google’s low-light photography mode that captures great photos even in dimly lit environments. The camera also supports HDR+ with bracketing, which captures multiple photos at different exposures and merges them to create a well-balanced image.

Inside the punch hole at the front sits a 10.8MP selfie camera which comes with a 92.8° field of view, 1/3.1″, 1.22µm and f/2.2 aperture. While the pixel size on the selfie camera of the Pixel 7 is not as large as the back camera, it is still considered to be a good size for a smartphone camera. Combined with the wide field of view, the 10.8-megapixel sensor with 1.22µm pixel size allows you to capture detailed and immersive wide-angle photos and videos on the Google Pixel 7.

Hardware

The Google Pixel 7 is powered by Google’s custom-made Tensor G2 chip, which is designed specifically for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. The Tensor chip is a system-on-a-chip (SoC) that integrates the CPU, GPU, and other components into a single package.

The Tensor chip features a 5-nanometer manufacturing process, which allows for greater efficiency and performance compared to previous generations of smartphone chips. It also includes a dedicated Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for machine learning tasks, which enables faster and more efficient AI and machine learning operations.

The Pixel 7’s Tensor chip includes an octa-core CPU with two high-performance Arm Cortex-X1 cores and six efficiency cores, as well as a powerful Arm Mali-G710 GPU for graphics-intensive tasks. The chip also includes 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, which helps to ensure smooth performance and fast app loading times and places it as a good gaming phone. This phone also support up to 256GB internal storage but there is no MicroSD card for expansions.

Furthermore, the Google Pixel 7 runs on the latest Android version 13 and also features a new always-on display with more customization options, improved notifications, and enhanced voice recognition capabilities.

Battery

The Google Pixel 7 is equipped with a 4355mAh Li-Ion battery for long lasting usage.  The larger battery capacity, combined with the more efficient Tensor chip and optimizations in Android 13, should result in longer battery life compared to previous Pixel models.

Google claims that the smartphone can last up to a full day with regular use, and can be charged up to 50% in just 30 minutes using the included 20W USB-C fast charger. It also supports wireless charging and reverse wireless charging, which allows you to charge other compatible devices by placing them on the back of the Pixel 7.

Of course, battery life will depend on a variety of factors, including usage patterns, screen brightness, and the types of apps you use. However, the Pixel 7’s larger battery capacity and more efficient hardware and software should result in solid battery life for most users.

For connectivity option, the Pixel 7 supports Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, USB-C, and 5G connectivity, which provides faster download and upload speeds compared to 4G LTE. The Pixel 7 also features other sensors like accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor, which help to provide a better user experience.
