After the Super Eagles’ 1-0 loss to Tunisia in the round of 16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, former Eagles attacker Julius Aghahowa was not thrilled with Maduka Okoye’s performance.
The Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper, according to the former Super Eagles striker, should have prevented the Tunisian goal and saved his country from an ignominious exit from the continental final.
Tunisia’s winner came 63 seconds into the second half, as Okoye let Youssef Msakni’s striker beat him from 25 yards.
Aghahowa, who was a member of the Super Eagles side that won silver at the 2000 edition, singled out Maduka Okoye for criticism in response to the setback.
“Okoye should have saved the ball since he saw it heading his way,” stated the former Shakhtar Donetsk striker.
“I’m disappointed, and I believe he could have done better.” We didn’t deserve to lose this game at all. However, it has occurred, and we must accept our fate,” he said.
