Nigeria prepared to win AFCON again, says Ademola Lookman

Atalanta and Nigerian attacker, Ademola Lookman, said that he and his Super Eagles teammates are seriously fighting to win the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) again.

Lookman said this during a chat with the Super Eagles media officer, Babafemi Raji even as the team has adopted the slogan, ‘Let’s do it again’ ahead of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

“As a squad and and as a team, we have got a strong mindset and we are together, you know like the slogan let’s do it again, we are fighting to do it again,” he said on the team’s ambition going into the competition,” Lookman said.

“I think as a team like I said, we are together, we are behind each other.

“As individuals, we believe in ourselves and as a team, we believe in ourselves, that is the mindset.”

The 26-year-old during the chat also talked about his readiness to help the Super Eagles achieve something great at the tournament.

“Just like everyone, I do my best for the team and I promise to bring my A-game to this tournament for Nigeria and the fans,” said Lookman who would be representing Nigeria in a major tournament for the first time.

“We will see as a team where that takes us in Ivory Coast.”

Lookman scored the winner in his final game before leaving for AFCON duty with the Super Eagles of Nigeria as Atalanta just about managed to beat Lecce 1-0.

The Nigerian attacker has seven goals and three assists in 23 games this season.

He has scored 22 goals in 56 overall games for Atalanta and provided eleven assists.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro on December 29 named his final 25-man squad list for the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire from January 13 to February 12, 2024.

Peseiro selected three goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and eight forwards as Nigeria launch their onslaught for a fourth AFCON title, having won at Nigeria 1980, Tunisia 1994 and South Africa 2013.

The three-time AFCON champions will confront two-time winners and host nation, Ivory Coast in Group A where they will also face Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
