Atletico Madrid’s Samu Omorodion Reports Former Club to LaLiga over ‘Abusive’ Contract Clause

The Super Eagles-eligible striker believes his former club, Granada were unfair in their dealings last summer.

Atletico Madrid’s acquisition of Samuel Omorodion from Granada last August seemed like a straightforward transfer, but recent developments have thrown a wrench into the works.

The 19-year-old forward, who initially caught the eye by scoring against Los Rojiblancos in the 2023-24 season opener, has now lodged a complaint against his former club over what he deems to be an “abusive” contract clause.

The Transfer Saga Unfolds

Last summer, Atletico Madrid swiftly secured the services of Omorodion from Granada. However, the circumstances surrounding the transfer have come under scrutiny after the player’s recent actions. Atleti paid Omorodion’s €6 million release clause to Granada, facilitating the move to the Spanish capital.

Despite the seemingly smooth transfer, Omorodion has taken issue with the valuation of his release clause. He argues that his salary at Granada did not justify such a high release clause amount. Consequently, he has reported Granada to LaLiga, alleging that the clause was “abusive.”

An official complaint has been lodged, signalling the commencement of legal proceedings between Omorodion and his former club. The case is expected to be resolved in the coming months, with implications for both parties involved.

If Omorodion’s complaint proves successful, Atletico Madrid stands to benefit financially. Should LaLiga rule in favour of the young forward, Atleti could be refunded the €6 million they paid for his services. Such a reimbursement would provide a significant financial boost to the club, particularly amid their ongoing financial challenges.

Awaiting Resolution

As the case unfolds, both Atletico Madrid and Granada await the resolution of the dispute. The outcome will not only impact the financial standing of the clubs involved but also set a precedent for future contractual negotiations in Spanish football.

The saga surrounding Samu Omorodion’s contract clause serves as a reminder of the complexities inherent in modern football transfers. As the legal proceedings unfold, all eyes will be on LaLiga as they adjudicate on this contentious issue, with potentially far-reaching consequences for clubs and players alike.
